UAE Remote Work Visa and Retirement Visa in 2026: Income, Fees and Who Qualifies

For many of my clients the Golden Visa is more than they need. If you work remotely or you have retired, two cheaper visas exist, and both let you bring the family. Sources: u.ae on the remote work visa, the GDRFA Dubai service page, u.ae on the retirement visa and the BRIDGES virtual work page. Checked on 2 November 2026.
The remote work visa
This self-sponsored visa lets you live in the UAE while working for an employer or clients abroad. You do not need a UAE employer or a UAE company.
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Income | at least $3,500 a month |
| Work | employment or business outside the UAE |
| Passport | valid for at least 6 months |
| Health insurance | valid in the UAE |
| Term | 1 year, renewable |
GDRFA Dubai lists the fees for an applicant inside the country: AED 200 for the permit, AED 10 Knowledge and AED 10 Innovation fees, AED 500 for applying from inside the UAE and AED 20 for delivery. The decision usually takes 48 hours. You still pay for the medical test, the Emirates ID and insurance. After the visa expires there is a grace period of 60 days.
Proof I prepare with clients: a contract or letter from the employer, the last payslips or invoices, and bank statements showing the income arriving.

The retirement visa
This 5-year renewable visa is for people aged 55 or over who have worked at least 15 years, in the UAE or abroad. On top of that you need one of these:
- a property worth at least AED 1,000,000;
- savings of at least AED 1,000,000;
- income of at least AED 180,000 a year, which is AED 15,000 a month.
Each emirate applies the rules itself. In Dubai the GDRFA requires income of AED 240,000 a year, shown by six months of bank statements, and a deposit has to be transferred into the UAE within 60 days. The BRIDGES retirement page adds practical details.
Which one fits
For a family where one partner works remotely, the remote work visa is the quickest start, but it must be renewed every year. For a couple over 55 with savings or a pension, the retirement visa gives five calm years. If you own property worth AED 2,000,000, compare both with the Golden Visa through property, which lasts 10 years.
Questions and answers
How much income do I need for the UAE remote work visa?
At least $3,500 a month, or its equivalent in another currency, from an employer or clients outside the UAE.
How long is the remote work visa valid?
One year, renewable as long as you still meet the conditions. You can sponsor your family on it.
What are the conditions of the UAE retirement visa?
You must be 55 or older with at least 15 years of work in or outside the UAE, and have either AED 180,000 a year of income, AED 1,000,000 in savings, or a property worth AED 1,000,000. Dubai sets the income at AED 240,000 a year.
Does the retirement visa lead to a Golden Visa?
No, they are separate. If you own property worth AED 2,000,000, the Golden Visa gives you a longer term.
